The Dean's Office, Miskatonic University, Arkham, Massachusetts
The dean paced back and forth across the end of the lecture hall. He paused talking every few sentences to stare at one of the five. The Chief of Police just sat looking stern.
"There are those who are sympathetic concerning your actions. Some may even think you heroic."
Pause. Shelby smiled, straightened up and thrust his chin out. Then he thought better of it and slumped.
"That view is decidedly not shared by me or by the police."
Pause. Mrs. Dakota winked at the Chief knowingly, but got no reaction from him.
"The amount of damage alone is appalling. One house burnt to the foundation."
Pause. Thornberry winced. His left arm was still wrapped in gauze from shoulder to elbow.
"Two nearby houses suffered roof damage. Three vehicles were destroyed and four were so damaged they may never be used again." The Dean looked to the Chief of Police. "That's right. We can't even be sure what the slime coating them is. Nobody really wants to go near them, let along try to clean them."
Pause. Amanda looked like she was about to say something and then tightly closed her mouth and sat on her hands.
"There have been requests from the mayor and the city council for the three of you to be expelled." He stared at Shelby, Thornberry and Amanda. And the other two of you arrested and tried." He started at Mrs. Dakota and Old Mr. Cincinnati.
Pause. The Chief nodded.
"The only mitigating factor is the three students who were rescued, and the stolen artifacts that were recovered."
Pause. Mr. Cincinnati stared at his shoes.
"So what are we to do with you five? Hand out medals or indictments? If I thought we could just drop the matter and you would all promise to never do anything like this again that would be my solution."
Pause. All five investigators looked away.
"But we know that isn't going to happen. Fortunately I have another solution. I have an offer and both the Chief and I strongly suggest you accept without reservation."
Pause. This time both the Chief and the Dean made it a point to stare at each of the five in turn.
"We have reason to send you all to Texas." He added, "You will leave in two days."
